    The importance of Oracy

At Lumbertubs, we believe that Oracy underpins all aspects of learning. Without having effective Oracy skills, we believe that children could be at a disadvantage. The ability to communicate effectively, whether that is through pictures, sign language or speech, is a life skill which all children need in education and beyond school.

We are proud to be working in collaboration with Voice 21 to develop high-quality oracy across our school. We want every child to feel confident to find their voice, share their ideas and listen carefully to others.

Through dedicated oracy lessons and opportunities for purposeful talk across the curriculum, children learn how to communicate effectively. We use the Listening Wheel, Discussion Guidelines, Talk Tactics and sentence stems to explicitly teach and support the skills needed for effective speaking and listening. These approaches give children a consistent framework for listening, discussing, questioning, building on ideas and expressing their thinking clearly.
